How to   Prevent Colon Cancer

Cancer of the colon is one of the most common and most deadly cancers. Fortunately, however, it is largely avoidable.

One way to reduce the chances of getting colon cancer, according to many experts, is through one's diet. In particular, it is important to (1) minimize consumption of red meat and (2) frequently eat cruciferous vegetables. These vegetables include broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower and Chinese cabbage. They contain a substance called phytochemicals that stimulates the body to break down potential carcinogens.

It is also very important to get a colon exam, called a colonoscopy, at least every seven to ten years after age 50. This exam can often not only find, but also remove, polyps in the intestine before they become cancerous. Although such an exam might seem to be embarrassing or uncomfortable to those who have not experienced it, it rarely is. Many people who have experienced the exam say that the best part of it is the feeling of relief that they experience after it is all over that either no problems were found or that any potential problems were taken care of before they could become serious. This exam is definitely worth having, and also encouraging one's family members and friends to have it as well. It saves lives.
